Statement from Filmmaker
"A Thief" sprung from memories. Memories of my childhood, of a child's imagination run wild, ignited into a feverish anxiety by apocalyptic sermons. In making this film, I was attempting to capture a flicker of that anxiety, that trauma. Because yes, I think it can be traumatic to immerse children in a religious environment, an environment predisposed to fear. It rewires the brain in strange ways, so that every moment becomes life or death, every interaction plagued by the threat of eternal damnation.
